I was first bit by the iron bug back in 1987 when I received my first barbell for Christmas. I was 6. It was in the Hulk Hogan kids Barbell set which included a barbell, weight plates, barbell collars, a workout chart, wrist bands, and a headband. I have been a home gym enthusiast and a barbell guy ever since. As teenager we lifted in high school football, at the YMCA, and I had a basic bench press set up at home with those old concrete plastic weights.
In around 2015-2016, I had been working in sells and mostly living out of my car 16hrs day. Which meant at that time I had been using too much caffeine and eating too much fast food. I had gained a lot of weight over a few years of that lifestyle. In order to get back on top of that, I started to build out my garage gym. I went on to lose 120lbs with a very basic garage gym set up. It was basically just a barbell , iron plates, and a bench. This was when I was bit by the iron bug once again. This was the time I now call the golden age of used home gym equipment. The time period when you could find cast iron plates for .40 cents a pound and barbells for $50.
I starting building my home gym one step at a time mostly with used equipment I found in garage sales, craig’s list, facebook marketplace, free items, and a few new things from sporting goods stores like Dick’s. At that time, I had no extra money or disposable income. The majority of my money always went to the normal household bills. The budget got even tighter when we had kids. At that time owning Rogue Fitness, Sorinex, Rep Fitness, Kabuki Strength, and American Barbell equipment all seemed like pipe dreams.
Then 2020 Happened and the home gym market exploded like nothing we have ever seen before. I started buying and selling (flipping) home gym equipment and upgrading my current gym with new pieces from my dream companies. It has changed a lot in a few years, but we have learned a lot about equipment manufactures, suppliers, and quality.
I remember reading an article online several years back. In the article, it said that you can build “A State of the Art” training facility in your garage and you have one of the best gyms for your personal training style. It took some time and effort, but we believe we have done just that. We share our experiences and want to help you build the the perfect home gym that’s right for you and your space.
